The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Auto T.R.A.P. Unit is an undercover unit comprised of plain clothes tactical officers using unmarked vehicles. T.R.A.P. is an acronym for Tactical Recovery Apprehension Program(AKA . The inception of the unit was due in part to a rapid increase of auto thefts in 1996. The unit began as a pilot project, with the goal of reducing auto thefts, eliminating police pursuits, increasing arrests, recovering vehicles prior to dismantling, and the apprehension of violent felony suspects. Success was immediate, and improvements to the program continue.
Since the inception of the unit, Orange County has seen dramatic reductions in auto theft, with increased arrests related to auto theft. Auto Trap has moved from a pilot project to a fully staffed component of the Sheriff’s Office. Working in concert with the Criminal Investigations Division-Auto Theft Unit, auto theft suspects stand little chance of success in Orange County.
