SAFE KIDS Walk This Way 2007

Safe Kids WORLDWIDE and program sponsor FedEx Express developed SAFE KIDS Walk This Way in 2000 to bring national and local attention to pedestrian safety issues. Pedestrian injury is the second leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children ages 5 to 14, claiming the lives of 733 children in 1999 alone. In 2000, nearly 44,600 children were treated in emergency rooms for pedestrian-related injuries. SAFE KIDS Orange County Fl, has been selected by National SAFE KIDS to participate for SAFE KIDS Walk This Way 2007. In 2003 ten schools participated. In 2004, twenty-two schools participated, In 2006, 37 schools participated. If your school does not participate with our program, you can start a pedestrian program in your community with the tools from this section as well as tools from the Pedestrian E-Toolkit! (Located from various web sites which are listed on the left side of this web page) SAFE KIDS Walk This Way is a multifaceted program involving:
1. High-visibility school-based events for International Walk to School Day
2. School assembly and classroom activities that teach pedestrian safety to children
3. Data collection documenting risks to pedestrians in areas surrounding schools
4. School safety committees and community-wide pedestrian safety task forces making changes to improve walking environments.
