Motorcycles are the vehicles of choice for deputies assigned to the squad and are what most citizens associate with the Traffic Unit, members of the section, especially deputies assigned to the Evening Traffic Enforcement/DUI Squad regularly, patrol in marked and unmarked patrol cars.
The Traffic Unit regularly conducts traffic enforcement details on county roadways with an inordinate number of traffic accidents or responds to citizen’s complaints on speeders in their neighborhoods. Deputies assigned to the Traffic Unit area also called upon to work school zones and assist with dangerous school crossings when no crossing guard is available. And they regularly conduct special holiday traffic safety and DUI details throughout the year. Their primary mission is to keep the county’s highways as safe as possible.
In addition to their traffic enforcement duties members of the section also provide security escorts for visiting dignitaries, conduct funeral escorts, and participate in community relations and educational events.

2008 Activity Summary
During 2008 the agency's Traffic Enforcement Squad issued 45,886 Uniform Traffic Citations representing 46 percent of the 101,338 citations issued by the entire agency. Due to the fact that 2008 was and election year the section worked 4,918 man-hours on escort details, up an amazing 2,253 percent over the 209 manhours committed to similar details the previous year. over 4,160 man-hours were worked to handle the 3,272 traffic complaints received during 2008 while another 1,528 man-hours was committed to school zone traffic enforcement activities. In addition members of the squad worked over 1,100 hours to support the agency wide 2008 violent crime initiatives. |
