Minimum Qualifications

for all Sworn Positions

  • Good work history
  • Accredited high school or GED diploma 
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English
  • At least 20 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Valid driver's license for the last year
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence
  • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces
  • No illegal drug usage within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis
  • Must be in good physical condition

Benefits

Sworn Pay

The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) contains a pay step plan that tops out at $95,512 for Deputy Sheriff.  The current CBA also provides uniforms, firearms, necessary equipment and a take home car as well as pay for education reimbursement, shoes/boots, shift differential, longevity, specialty unit pay, etc. 

Recruits who are sponsored to the police academy earn $24.50 per hour while at the academy. Healthcare and other benefits of employment commence immediately upon hire.  After academy graduation, newly certified deputies receive their raise to the starting deputy sheriff pay of $26.51 per hour ($55,140 annually) and, if eligible, the Orange County Sheriff's Office will facilitate the process for the new deputy to receive the State of Florida’s $5,000 Recruitment Bonus. 

Non-sponsored new deputies with at least one year of experience receive a $1,500 signing allowance upon hire.  New deputies who come to us with two years of experience receive a $2,500 signing allowance.  Four years of experience qualifies for the $2,500 signing allowance plus entry into the pay plan at step two, or $57,096 annually (plus incentives: $62,321).

Deputy Green has been a law enforcement officer since 1998.  He retired from a state law enforcement agency in 2019 before joining the Orange County Sheriff's Office in 2020 where he served as a Deputy in the Uniform Patrol Division.  Deputy Green is also a military veteran who served in the United States Navy.  He is available to assist with various job-related questions.
